So how did I become the Mad Exercise Scientist that I am, complete with a Lab Full of the Most Awesome Gym Rats to prove it?
It didn’t begin because I am, or was, so fit and strong. I started this stage of my life very SICK and TIRED.
It seems like so long ago, but there was a time when I was so grossly overweight that I really was sick. Sick with high blood pressure, obesity related sleep apnea, pre-diabetes… I was a heart attack, or stroke, waiting to happen.
The stress of life was taking its toll on me. Food and drink became my medicine and I was consuming all the wrong things in dangerous dosages. My body was literally falling apart. And exercise? Who had time to exercise? I knew that excuse all too well!
Talk about tired! My obesity related sleep apnea prevented me from being able to get a good night’s sleep. Ironically, because I was always so tired, I could fall asleep anywhere at the drop of a hat. I was sick, and I was tired. And I became sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Take a look… pretty sad old man eh?
Add to that, I was really, really sad inside. Because what people saw on the outside, and what I saw in the mirror, was not who I had imagined myself to have become.
I grew up on a different planet from our current generation. We’re talking long ago before the digital age when you had to play outside or go out of your mind. Sports, riding bikes, climbing trees, running around the neighborhood till after dark, not always staying out of trouble while trying to stay strong American boyhood. So while it wasn’t in the cards for me to begin following a “fitness career” way back then, I developed movement, sports, and strength and conditioning skills from a very young age.
I even developed a bit of a reputation on the field… are the 70s really that long ago?
That was just the beginning.
Through the years I was in and out of gyms. The weight would go up and down, but mostly up. As family and careers took up more time, working out took up less and less.
I knew I was sick and getting sicker. What had happened to me? I came to a point where I knew I had to change. I had to change mentally, and I had to change physically. Either way, I understood that I had to start taking care of my body and get back into shape.
That was when I ran across one of those 12-week body transformation contests with a $50,000 cash prize. Now, I didn’t have the help and motivation a personal trainer could have provided, but that kind of money added some serious incentive.
And when I do something, I go all out. (Come to boot camp you’ll find that out). I took to researching and learning everything I possibly could about diet, exercise, and weight loss. I read books, reports, and research articles. I learned what the winners of past contests had done. I looked for motivation and inspiration. And I discovered that transformation begins on the inside. I took the best of all that I learned, put it all together, and took massive action.
How did I do? Well, I didn’t win. But the sponsor of the contest saw fit to put me on the cover of their next transformation guide, as you can see here. That’s me, right above the female champion and contest winner.
So, while I didn’t win the money, I did win my life back and I wouldn’t have traded that for any amount of money. No longer was I sick and tired. I felt young, alive and exuberant. I felt like I had another chance at life and I was grateful. And that is when I knew I wanted to make health and fitness my life’s work. Because when you are grateful, you want to try to give something back. Not out of guilt, but out of a spirit of giving.
Fast forward a number of years and my chance make health and fitness my life’s work finally came. I went back to school, got my education, gathered my credentials, and pt together all that I’ve learned during a lifetime’s journey and called Torrington MissFits Boot Camp.
Today, MissFits Boot Camp is a family friendly, state-of-the-art, fat loss and fitness program. When it comes to health, fitness, and taking care of you, so you can be the best you can be, that is what our MISSION is all about!
